if you have premium then hook it up to the net and you have 1 month free anyway

Yup, creating a Silver 'tag will turn it into a Gold for 30 days for free 
Unless, you've already created 5 'tags on that particular console in which case ya won't.

its preowned xbox i got so who evers it was before me has proberly used up the free trial

you get 5 accounts worth though as said, not very likely that have all been used? give it a try it dont cost you anything

yeah make a new silver account while you are connected to the net, and if there are any free trials left, then it will auto upgrade to gold for 30 days
