Off the top of my head there's 4 people I know have them; 1 has nothing in house but the box on the wall, the other 3 have either an internet line or the basic tv package. None have to rescan constantly and none have had to update firmware over 18 months+
The biggest thing is re-entering codes which they go through a spate of then nothing for months and having to rescan for setanta when it changed frequency.

You do only need a cable coming into your house, which means somebody has to have had cable at some point in the past, I know this for a fact because i've seen loads of people do it, the internet sometimes works as well, no subscription required.
not always true,
NTL disconnected all unused cablesd at the exchange in my area due to saturation

they can change the keys, but they can always be cracked on current software
to change the key software would require ALL legit boxes to be replaced

When I moved into my flat over two years ago all I had was an NTL cable sticking out the wall. The couple who had the flat before me had the NTL cable tv but when they moved out they cancelled the subscription.
When I connected my Eurovox, punched in a few settings, scanned for channels there was no trouble getting all the channels.
You do sometimes have to rescan or load new software on but its usually readily available for free online and is only a 5min job.
