Im trying to set up a friends new netgear modem router so they can get wireless.

They had a speedtouch thing before, but it doesnt have wireless.

The netgear router is plugged in fine, and everything can connect to it both wirelessly and via the cables, but the router itself is not connecting to the internet.

What to do?

Start - Run - cmd

Type ipconfig

Note the Default Gateway numbers

Open a browser and go to http://192.168.0.1

(or whatever number the Default Gateway is)

Log on and do whatever your ISP needs to get a connection. Default user/pass is usually admin/password.

Should note that its a new laptop too, so the speedtouch modem hasnt been installed on it.

Tried the above, but the bit for the default gateway numbers was blank?

The new router should be giving out IP address using DHCP although it could be turned off by default (very unlikely).

Might be worth resetting the router.

Still havent solved this...

Everything seems OK to the point of the router conecting to the internet.

Tired connecting in various ways, but after trying to connect to wanadoo, I am met with a "Wrong username or password" error, but it is definatly the right username and password.

Also, if I try to get into the router setup page, I can assess it using the usall admin password, but then it comes up with a message along the lines of "Authorisation failed"

I really am stumpted with this one.

Thats the thing, I try to get onto the WAN page, but after it accepts the admin password, it comes up with a message like "Authoriastion error" or something along those lines.

TBH Not one of my routers has been admin/password as default. I'd check the manual.

If it's coming up authorisation error you're not putting in the correct details.
