I need my photo taken to go in the magazine thingie for a couple of design shows. Bearing in mind I'm the most un-photogenic person you will ever see, I've decided that it might be a good idea to get a photographer to come and take some pics of me so I can submit a nice picture 
Was just wondering if anyone knows of someone who's good, and how much it might cost? Been looking on Google and I think that 'lifestyle portraits' are what I want rather than just a mug shot...

You want to go and see someone in a studio if you want 'proper' shots. Most will have props to create an informal background if thats what you're after. I don't really think someone coming to your house would be great as it would take forever to set up decent lights etc.
Bit of a guess at cost, but reckon about £75/100 per hour for a fixed number of images supplied to you, plus extra for more images if you wanted them.

If you want a good portrait you'll need good lighting. ie a studio.

I wouldnt say so. We had portrait stuff done in a studio for our end of year displays and they we shit, they had all the lighting and everything.
You can produce better with a white sheet, few flashes and a home-made soft box

Was going to say, we've had a photographer over before to take some pics. She brought her lights over in the back of the car and the pictures came out well...

Well I did this in a bedroom with really basic stuff and my limited knowledge,
I imagine a proffesional with proffesional equiptment could get perfect results without a studio

How did you get it so well lit all round Matt? Does the flash just bounce off the white sheets?

its a cream wall with a dado rail at about her kneck hight I was shooting against
Just had my speedlight on a tripod behind her set at full blast to completly blow everything, the on camera flash was triggering the speedlight so that was set to full power too.
the speedlight over powered the on camera flash though and her face was quite dark, I upped the exposure about 1.2 using the RAW thingy and it turned out ok,
could do with another flash and a soft box Ideally but I could justfy spending that much for the sake of just fun

How did you get the flash to fire wirelessly? Did you buy a cheap wireless thingy on eBay or what?

I used Nikon CLS, Ive yet to get remote triggers. anybody reccomend any (cheap ones)

I've heard the cheap ones can be a bit temperamental matt. Best off going with some decent pocket wizard ones, not cheap like, which is always the case when it comes to photography as you will probably know!

I got some poverty spec triggers off ebay and they work perfect every time (so far).
Don't know how long they'll last, but work first time every time at the moment.
Pocketwizards would be ace as Jonny says, but a lot of money for something you may/may not use a lot.

Which ones do you use Andy? I really need some but ive heard good and bad things about the ebay ones. I use off camera flash a lot so i think if im going to get some i may as well get the best ones.

Only thing I would say, with both triggers, is that the reciever is a crap design.
You end up with the flash raised up by about 2/3 inches higher than normal, putting all the weight up high when mounted on a tripod/stand and they're pretty unstable.

I have a cheap set of pt04's and never really had any problems, the odd time it doesnt fire but that tends to be cause the connections are a bit loose.
