i asked a while ago about gunk around the inside of the oil cap, and some people said check your water for oil, and theres like an oily layer ontop of the water. but i thought i'd just add a picture to make sure.
Cheers

Could be condensation from doing short journeys?
Like Torsa g said, check your dipstick and header tank for any other gunk.

You can't say that is the headgasket, without diagnosing it further. My oil cap is in a worse state than that, but my headgasket hasn't gone. To me, that looks like condensation.
You need to ask yourself:
1) Has it or is it losing water?
2) Is there lots of white smoke out the rear, even after the car has warmed up eliminating condensation in the exhaust?
3) Does the oil on the dipstick have 'mayo' in it?
4) Are you getting heat through the heaters?
5) Does it rise to boil over/get really hot easily?
If your answers are yes to the majority of those, it's probably headgasket and something to worry about.
Also, if the headgasket is that bad, it'll run like a bag of pooh.

dout its the head gasket, most new cars get mayo on the cap, its just condensation from the engine not gettin warm when driven

1) it isnt loosing water,
2) nope only when its cold,
3) nope no "mayo" on the dipstick,
4)yes im getting heat through the heaters
5) nope takes a while to warm up lol.
I'm gettin it serviced, and i think what john c20xe is right, i dont drive long enough for the engine to get warm, i only do max of 6 mile journeys at 1 time e.g. to college. the car had gunk around the oil cap when i bought it and when i put it in for the m.o.t nothing majour came up about it.

Going on what you said Darkside-Dee I very much doubt it's the headgasket. And definitely condensation. I'll try and get a pic of mine and u2u you it or something. If you can bare it on the short journeys, don't have your heater on so that the engine gets super warm

You can give you car stick, as long as you let it warm up first, which means not taking it over about 3krpm for about 20 mins depending on conditions etc of course.

Leave early one morning and take a long way round to college, an hours drive and try to keep it at a nice consistent speed to allow the engine to warm up, once its 90c ish you can give it a little bit of stick (dont go bouncing it off the limiter like a tool) to clear it out a bit

Also moisture in the air at this time of year can cause it. I have hardly any mayo in the summer, short journeys or not.
If you want to be double sure, just take it to a garage and ask them to do a test (can't really remember what it's called). Anyway they put this big syringe type thing in the header tank with a chemical in it, which changes colour when exhaust gases are present which = headgasket gone

NOT headgasket failure.

The car has been like it since before Christmas, in which time I've covered over 1000 miles and it has stayed the same.
Damp air and condensation only
