How long into a 18 month contract is it before you can upgrade?

Surely that's down to the network and not the person/company that sold you the tariff? Generally it's 3 months before contract end and the remaining would roll over.
So, the answer would be 15 months in and then when you took another 18months out it's roll over and make it a 21 months contract.

some times the companies will buy you out of you previous contracts to get you onto a new one?

It depends on what contract you want to go for...
I asked a lot of questions when they bought me out.
I had 6 months left of an 18 month contract at 15 quid per month.
Basically, they have a certian margin to play with, so it depends on how muhc your current contract is, how much your new contract would be, and how many months left.
They'll easily give up about £80-£100 cash
though.

£40 a month at the moment, will pop in at lunch only 8 months through it at the mo, but worth a shot

10 months at £40pm?
You'll need some serious bartering skills...
Advice for anyone else thinking of doing it, make sure the amount left on your contract is around £120, and if it's less, pretend it's £120...
They'll give you the cash.
