Ive got a 22" screen that I want to put up on the wall, now when connected with a 2m VGA cable i can run the screen at 1680x1050 all ok and is perfect, however when i connect up a longer VGA cable as its going to be quite far away i can select the same Res?? i can only have 1600x1200??
Do different length cables only do certain resolutions?

From that i'd assume that the longer cable is degrading the signal that much that it's not reporting supported resolutions properly, if it's nvidia or ati graphics try going into the respective control panels and selecting manually.
Long VGA cables are one case were more expensive ones should be better.

iirc
DVI is limited to 1 meter at 1600x1200 resolution.
VGA is limited to 10 meters at 1024x768. You can get repeaters for VGA that will boost the signal, but im unsure if it will correct your problem.

There aren't any hard limits, it's letting him select a higher reolution than is required.
I've got a 3 meter dvi cable here doing 1920x1080.

Just got an Intel on on a HP Laptop at the mo, The screen will be about 20 Meters away in the pub reception.
Im gonna give an IP KVM a blast a bit later, but have a 30m VGA cable that i wanted to use.

30m VGA will probably only give you 1280 max i would think one of our customers had a similar problem if i remember we ended up speccing him a belkin omniview cat5 kvm was quite pricey though although he was doing 60 odd meters
