hay peeps,

basicaly my misses pairents pc is so bloody slow its silly, takes around 10 minuits to load up and then everything is a 5 minuit click..

now ive checked it over and its a 2.1ghz intel pent 4 with 512mb ram which is a little slower in prossesing sped than my pc, i have checed the hard drive for how much space is left and its got over 50% left, and checked the anti virus software, latest norton with up to date defonitions.

symptoms:
extreamely slow running
has now packed up alowing the printer to print, and most o the time says windows doesnt recognise the usb drive (pinter works fine have checked it)
keeps coming up with vertul memory low
has never been looked after at all.

another thing is its got a crazy amount of icons on the main screen.

anyone got any ideas on programs that are free or can be cracked that will clean up the registry and solve hese problems?

If it was me personally, I'd just format and start again. Possible add some more ram. I've got a 512MB DDR1 stick here that you can have for next to nothing.

Last few years

Why can't you format? What's the beef?

You can backup all their stuff and put it back on.

It's probably full of shite.

If it's a definite no because they're stupid, then more ram, spyware/virus cleaner, registry cleaner, defrag HDD.

Oh, and http://www.ccleaner.com/

I'd scrap Norton too, as that won't be helping the speed. There's better/faster free virus software available.

Definetly calls for format, most people will format at least once a year.

If they really really dont want to format then the only thing to do is go through Add/Remove removing everything that isnt needed. Then install a defragger (maybe use windows one, but its not the best) and do that. After that clean the registry, run Spybot, get a decent low maintenance AntiVirus (google Avira AntiVir for a free one) and put programs back on one at a time that are needed.

Although tbh, a format would take half as long. Someone will sell you another 512DDR stick for postage I would say, that will instantly transform it

Get Norton off it first, it kills the PCs speed. Up the 512mb to at least 1.5gb and you should see a big difference, I did.

Bin norton, new scan for viruses with a scanner that might actually catch something and then defrag etc

Uninstall Norton Fully
Uninstall and reinstall printer if your having an issue with it
Increase virtual memory
More Ram, Peanuts nowadays
Disk Cleanup
Disk Defragment
a 2nd Disk Cleanup
Remove all system restore points but the most recent
Uninstall all software that is rarely used
If they use the Login screen, talk them out of it and have one user and individual folders, makes the machine run so much faster
Install a browser spell checker

ok well so far ive

un installed some programs which wernt used anymore (still shed loads on there but im doing this without them knowing atm as its pissing me off that they are moaning every 5 minuits about the thing)
did disk clean up
downloaded cccleaner which helped quite a bit
un installed the old ad-aware program and spybot sd
re installed the new versions that worked.
msconfig the pc to stop quite a few prossses starting and running all the time
have found that its got 4 printers installed all set to ready and only one pluged in. they never clen this thing out.
set them all to off line acept the one being used now the printer works
carrying out now a ad-aware scan
carrying out now a disk defrag

one thing i have found tho is that the pc has 3 versions of java installed taking up almost 500mb between them... they are only sposed to have one arnt they.
