You need to re-take your CBT every 2 years for life regardless of any car entitlements. You heard wrong!

Well i worked in close conjunction with a bike school and can say in full confidence it needs to be re-done every 2 years.

CBT is hardly a ballache. 2 hours riding round on a bike under supervision is hardly painstaking!

for moped entitlement only, if you pass your car driving test whilst your DL196 is still current or complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 after passing your car test, the certificate is not subject to expiry, you will therefore need to keep your DL196 certificate safely. Please note that this applies to mopeds only, for riding motorcycles as a learner the DL196 remains valid for two years

what does this mean? from direct.gov site

It means if you pass your test and do your CBT then it remains valid forever that you can ride upto a 50cc moped. However, if you want to ride upto a 125cc motorcycle you need to renew the CBT every 2 years.

The way to tell if its the the speedo cable is to undo it where it goes into the drive in the front wheel. Twist the cable fast and if you tacho moves then you no it needs a new speedo drive(very common). Nothing major though. Cheap and easy to replace. Also you can tell if it is restricted or not as it will have a powervalve, or not. This located undfer the fuel tank, just above where the exhaust meets the engine. These clog up and stick, so pull it out and clean it with wd40 regularly. Makes it a lot smoother.

Thanks very much mate, im currently paging through the service manual / workshop manual i downloaded off the forum, its very detailed on how to do your own maintenance, much better than car manuals that simply tell you to go to the dealer to get a problem sorted

Check what the definiation of a moped is though, I think they mean something that can't reach 20mph or something daft like that

You want about an inch of slack in the chain.

Tighten chain, rotate wheel (chains tighten in various spot), re-adjust chain.
