Can happen anywhere... I've been stuck in bergen for a week before waiting for a chopper
NF/Canada is pretty bad too.

Thank fuck for helicopters eh?
i guess you've never seen it done then
Moves with tides you mean waves
Its all pretty stable in decent weather now... DP systems on boats etc. Weather resrtrictions apply to crane ops as well as helicopter.
Meh, meant waves
I was talking to one of the old guys as work about this method, he was telling me about some of the odd conditions & rough seas he's encountered.
One such example, he had to go inspect one of the crane ropes that we'd just supplied that had fooked up not so long after instalation. Turns out it had been damaged due to the crane operators fault (shock loaded a daft weight). Rope needed changing out after a few weeks at a cost of about £10K
Anyway, he decided to tell it how it was & put the blame on the crane op. Needless to say he had a quite "bumpy ride" on the way back to the ship.
Last time he voiced his opinion on an oil rig

Yeah I got stuck halfway down, arms & legs everywhere. Good fun tho
I was expecting it to be a bit more intense, best bit was when some guy hurt his neck in the ditch & got cut out his wet suit & cut out his pants & strapped bollock naked to a spine board. Oh my

Aberdeen can be just as bad for flying out of. Our morning chopper today was delayed cause of fog in Aberdeen, glorious day out here just now aswell.
We have a "house mouse" that works in the accomodation block out here, usually either a joiner / plumber for doing domestic repairs.
Being a plumber, could maybe get into the HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) side of things
Obviously you would need your sea survival (BOSIET) first, (£800) and then have to start sending out cv's

Thats a lot of money to spend an a CV though. Most people do it sponsored, rather than paying out of their own pockets.
What are jobs like on Rigs just now? Safe enough? I know a few folk that work/worked with Talisman... :S
Also - what are general wages like on rigs?

Wages for a Technician are about £300-£325 a day.
Also lots of people are paying themselves through the safety training in hope of being better placed to get a job. Its considered that if your looking for a start you wont even get looked at if you dont have it. Well thats among non specialist work at least as theres so many folk wanting a job.
Safe Again probably depends what platform your on.

Theres so much folk out there that have their survival and looking for jobs that its pretty pointless trying to get a job without having it. Unless your a trades / specialist I reckon
Only dodgy jobs just now are drilling, alot of people getting paid off with companies stopping drilling and other companies can pull the plug at any minute. Supposedly theres alot of drilling rigs in Invergordon just now with no work.
I work on a Mobil paltform on the maintenance side of things. 10 people in my department, in the next few years half of them are going to retire so touch wood my job will be safe. Finish my training in a years time aswell
I think technician wages (Electrical, Instrument, Mechanical and Production) are around £50k a year. dont quote me on that though. Thats 2 on 3 off, earn £1k doing a weeks overtime, then still get 2 weeks at home

Yeah he's one of the lads Mike hangs with up here, hes fi Peterheed. Rest of us have to wait until 16th April to find out its proper pish!!
We finish up on 24th April so depending on how long the Total company induction lasts they could well be on their 1st trip late April.
You stayed at Jewel & Veg Halls? Brave man, its a shit hole, ive only stayed over one night for going to the casino

Yes, I work on placement (for an oil company) until I complete my Level 3 svq then I apply for a job either with them or go to another company.
