I really want to buy a CCTV package for the front of my house. Lots of chavs around my way and I intend on getting a new car soon which I'm really not looking forward to leaving outside.
What cameras do you use, and how do they work? I know it seems like a silly question but do they require power? Which method do they use to send the video and audio? Can you get wireless cameras or any sort?
I don't really need sound in all honesty.
What would you suggest?
Oh and I don't need it to record either. Just a video signal straight to a HDTV via Composite, Component, S-Video or HDMI.

Its a linux application which can read off analogue cameras, ip webcams, usb webcams etc and does everything them normal CCTV packages do, only record when it sees movement, time shifting, archiving and ignore certain zones within a frame.
We have some of them cheaper things here but they arent expandable, with ZoneMinder you can have as many cams as your computer can accept, in the case of analogue ones that just means having enough capture cards plugged in the back 
Then you can do stuff like let everyone at home view it on the home network, view it from the internet if you can setup the remote access up properly etc

It looks decent, but maybe a bit too 'complicated' for what I'm after. It still doesn't get me a physical camera either!
Any idea where to find these 'packages' you speak of? I'd sooner buy something that has been tried and tested than just grabbing one off the bay!

Oh right... Not a great plan really. My car is about 15-20 metres from my house, so at night they'd struggle to see them!
Either way, I want to actually view the camera... That's the whole point of it.
...and that's a LOT of money for a bit of plastic!

Camera systems can be relitively cheap. A decent camera/camera pack can be picked up for 100 notes and less.
Alot of cheaper camera's use the same sony module, so find out the innards and you could find a bargain
Recording...you need yourself a decent pc application (i.e. Zm) or a DVR with movement recording.
Old mans DVR has enough space to save 2 and a half weeks continuous before it runs out (good for when they go away) However that was a silly price and you probably wouldnt need anything quite that expensive.
If your after some decent hardware give me a shout, i have a lot of contacts

why dont you wish to record? If you just want to sit infront of your cctv images all night, why not just look outta the window?
Tbh i dont see the point in a view only cctv i.e. No recording, as it cant be of anyuse in court or as evidence etc.

My bedroom is the back bedroom. My car is out the front. That'd mean I'd have to constantly walking to the landing and back. I'd sooner wall mount a TV and have a direct feed into it which I can occasionally look up at and see that my car is still fine... I'm up till silly o'clock most days (been up all night today), so it's handy to just glance at now and again.
Recording someone breaking my windows isn't going to do much to undo the damage. I just want to see that our cars are safe and so on...

Ive used a number of different systems around the shops - from fully wired going to a recordable DVD system, to a wireless system going to a DVR system, and now setting up a networked POE IP camera system in the new shop.
I would ALWAYS go for a wired system where you can. I had no option but go for wireless where I used it, but it constantly has interference even for the short throw between the camera and the receiver.
I got most my stuff from ebay for the first two, they were just simple kits that cam with more or less everything needed for a decent price, and was just a case of installing them and watching them go.

That should give you direct connection to your TV with no recording ability. You'll need to use a seperate power cable and not using BNC to BNC which would also provide the power.
IMO- For the sake of maybe £100 you can buy a hard disk recorder and have the ability to upgrade in the future to more cameras plus record anything that goes on.

I've got a 16 channel DVR card off ebay in a server, 3 cameras recording all the time then a couple of modulators piping them round the house as 3 different TV channels.
Works fairly well.

That sort of thing, although not that one, think my ones are off ebay, plugged into the main aeriel booster that's then sent round the house.
Just tune them in like a normal tv channel.
With 3 on it takes a fair bit of playing about with what channel and the TV reception takes a bit of a hit but there's nowhere in the house that hasn't got sky or digital so we manage.

All depends how much you want to spend.
With CCTV its all about pay for what you get, couple of hundred quid then get a cheap analogue system from Maplins with a DVR.
If you want to up it a bit then look at IP Solutions with POE.
But the price will start to rise very quickly.
I work for an IP Surveillance company and its not cheap by no means, some of our 4 camera systems start at 10K 
Another option you have for a cheap home user solution is
1 x Web Cam XP Pro
Few Webcams (1.3Mp would do)
USB HDD
Webcam XP has all the features of high end porgrams built in, motion detection, masking areas, email / sms alerts, remote access.
Lets you pull in multiple feeds etc...
