The either have variable or fixed life servicing, can be quite expensive servicing because of the special oil they have an appitite for.

drive quite nice and the v6 makes the oil burner sound quite good. servicng could be costly though as they are a bit of a sod to work on.
still the old generation of diesel though so unlikely to have massive injector or fuel pump problems like some of the common rail stuff.

only real things to watch out for are
lack of power-air mass meter
injector rails leaking-perished seals
rocker cover gasket's leaking-these are nightmare to do
and if is automatic make sure kick down works and its had gear oil change
if possble get one thats got full history and make sure cambelts been done as these are very costly around £400 from dealer

joking right?
cambelts are 980 plus vat from audi, they reckon its a all day job at 90 an hour,
easily one in 4 hours for 420 plus vat from a specialist
people that say these engine aint easy to work on are just not hardened, i work in a specialist audi/vw garage and we see quite a few, all with varying mileages etc
personal preference to the servicing, long life is most peoples preference as it means less time in the garage, me personally would go for synta silva or synta gold oil, fixed service i/.e every 10'000 miles
negatives:
cat can block up, just needs hollowing out to sort
air mass meters are prone
egr valves sometimes stick
bad fuel economy, especially the auto's
positives:
available in quattro
pull well for a heavy car - sleeper
nice set of alloys and the look spliffin
