I've done this before but can't for the life of me remember how. It's pissing me off now so please help

net use lpt1: \\computername\printer /persistent:yes

If you don't want it to reconnect automatically after log on, remove the end bit.

best to use lpt1 or a virtual port?

Doesn't really seem matter.
Our network printers are mapped to lpt1 and lpt2 and we don't get any problems.

Actually, I've just remembered that non-admin users can't map a network printer to LPT1 if it's already mapped to the local parallel port!

saying it's mapped sucessfully but no printer is appearing. I'll give myself local admin rights and see if that works
