Using Mod_Rewrite, is it possible to rewrite a URL to give the effect of a sub-domain? So, I could have a folder which could be ecsid.co.uk/something and rewrite it to something.ecsid.co.uk...

Yes, but...

1) You must define an A record or a CNAME to support wild-card DNS in your domain's zone file.

2) Your host must allow wildcard subdomains, and pass requests for them to your server.

If either of these are missing, then the URL rewriting won't work.
