As title... any suggestions for a friend whos looking to buy online... mainly be used on road. Not really that bothered about suspension as it probably wont be worth having in his price range

For his price range the best MTB would be a Specialized Hardrock.
Anything Specialized in that price bracket will be best tbh.

Specialized hardrock with discs. Ive got one and its done my 14 stone well for 2 years of regular all weather abuse. all ive done is oiled the chain every now and again - havnt even washed it and its still running strong!

I got my old spec hardrock from beeline bicycles on Cowley road.
Once you've chosen a bike go in there and see if they have it, if so talk to the bold old guy and say how much you've seen it on net for and he should match it! Sorted my out, better to get a bike from a local shop for the free services etc

There really isnt much choice when it comes to suspension or not really, most bikes have it these days, and most of the time you will pay more for a bike without it!
From what you said, the crosstrail will be perfect for the kind of riding you want to do, with its 700c wheels you can get some good speed up on the road, and as it has 700x45 tires, you can still take it off road and have the grip there.
A hardrock would be wayy to slow for road riding with 26x2.0 tires on there, the only way to make it faster would be to put 26x1.5 tires on, which is going to cost you another £50 easily.

Just read this again, not sure hardrock would be a bike I'd recommend for mainly road riding, tyres are huge. I got my newest bike from summertown cycles on the Banbury Road, very helpful guys in there and they are stocking a new 'cube' range of bikes. I got a cube curve which is a very nice hybrid bike which is much better suited to road riding

I'd go second hand for that money and try and find a full suspension XC or I'd be looking at old stock 08 models for a bargain

Depends what you want it for and how tall you are, I ride a 16.5 frame because its more chuckable and less clumsy, my dad has a 19 (rarely sees the light of day) and I hate riding it.

I'm 6'2" and I ride a medium frame, its too small for me really but I HATE riding large frames, they do feel clumsy and unsettled.

You WILL regret it when the delivery man has bent your mech hanger and your gears dont work, not that they would have because it's not been set up anyway :/

 kinda true in some respects!
When someone buys a bike off us online, we take it out of the box, build it up, set up the gears and brakes etc etc etc, then take the front wheel off, turn the bars, and stick it into a bigger box, with some serious packaging going on!
