I Know when I was at Kingston college, there was a group of people studying a BTEC national diploma in Mechanical engineering who we're using a book called "build your own sports car for under 250 pounds". The car they built looked just like a caterham.
When I attending a uni in herts their mechanical engineering course was building a go kart which they raced.
Funny, uni builds a gokart and a college build a car. I thought uni students were supposed to be clever.

We are doing a project this summer to make a beach buggy. We have most of the parts like the mini engine and gearbox. We fabricated the shell and cage last summer so all we need are d-shafts to be made up and soe ancilleries and we can get building. There's 4 of us doing it but we just dont have the time.

My school done this a few years back. Built there own chassis etc.
The Leigh City Technology College.
They also built a small 2 man hovercraft too. Won lots of awards. Think i left b4 they finished the car though.
Lotus is exactly the same. Done a project on Caterham. Went to the factory, got taken out (all of us) at around 120mph. Its great, like a go kart.
Caterham bought out the Lotus 7 hence why its now the Caterham 7.
Each part is built by different people. 1 person does the engine, 1 does the suspension n brakes, one does the bodywork etc etc.
Small factory, great day though.

recaro1 thats the same book we are using the car is called a lo-cost hence the £250 part but it would be impossiable to build it for £250 unless you had a lot of contacts that are willing to give you a sh*t load of parts free

Stuckey, it wasn't that bad. Good technology features when i was there (this was like, 6 years ago nearly). Only just built the Post 16 room for when i left (dunno what it is now, not Post 16 anyway).
Was great for rugby.

My Dads got a Caterham, Got to test drive a superlight when he was looking to buy one. Couldnt believe how quick it was. Hit well over a ton very quick.
My dads only got a 1.6, even this does 0-60 in about 5 secs.
The caterham fireblade looks very interesting, revs to about 14000 rpm.
Any one been to the Caterham Factory? Its basically a little workshop. When I went there was a caterham being built that cost 30+ grand. Had Flip paint and superlight engine.

Caterhams always going to be quicker than the lotus do to the fact there newer and as such have more diverse engines fitted to them.
Caterham fit the ford ohcs the rover k series and the vaux 1.8 8 valve on twin carbs as I recall and the red top.
Many other engines have been fitted including cossie, rover v8s, bike engines etc etc.
I was looking at getting a caterham project over the last fortnight with a lancia twion carb twin carbs engine but unfortunately i cant really afford it.
