This is better than the tedious family link imo, being schooled in a certain country means you moved there young and probably find yourself feeling a native of that country.

The grandparent rule is farcical and should be scrapped.

Probably, but as he played school boy level, the England guys might have pursued him to play senior.

I thought the reason Giggs didn't play for England was to do with falling out with his dad or something like that so he chose to play for wales to spite him but when I just looked it up it would appear both his parents are welsh

Like they have been trying to do already?

Capello has already said he'll never play for England whilst he is manager, and I dont think Ive seen one little bit of indication from the FA that they are in favour of Almunia playing for England.

And thats different anyway, as he will effectively become British with a passport and everything because he has lived and worked here for so long, as can any foreign person in this world if they are here long enough. It just so happens he would be eligible as he has never played for Spain's national team.

I always thought/heard that Giggs chose Wales because of his mum, weird

Its not the same thing, his whole nationality would change in the eyes of the law (not just football), this is just being able to play because they went to school there, so their nationality would still be English or whichever it is.

Precisely

The only reaosn people get coinfused is his relartive lack of a welsh accent (wow iv eben out with 2 welsh birds both who had no accent! thankfully) and the fact he played for england schoolboys... but you play schoolbpy footy for wherever you are schooled!

It has always been the rule that if you were born in Northern Ireland that you had the choice of playing for Northern Ireland or the republic even if you were born in the united kingdom.
