...apparently the missus' parents next door neighbours in Spain have had their dog kidnapped... and the kidnappers replaced it with another one

Then having taken the 'replacement' dog to the vets and handed it in, the kidnappers then came back and kidnapped their other dog

Greyhounds IIRC

They even replaced it with a dog of the same breed, of similar appearance, presumably hoping they wouldn't notice.

whats the point of swapping one dog for another?

perhaps they bum dogs, and when the dogs get a bit slack they swap them for a fresh one?
