Another question on behalf of my mate bought the car (C20XE) but isn't declared. Going through the process of declaring it now.
Of course need engine number, which we are struggling to find
Borrowed a pic of Mantamarks engine bay for demonstration purposes!

Orange circle - found an 8 digit number as well as GM and 93 stamped here - not the one needed though right?
Quick Google said to look at the block where the engine and gearbox meet - can't find anything, very limited access though tbh! Anybody got some pics as to where I should be looking and a rough idea of code - any numbers it should start with, how many etc. Need to get this sorted ASAP!
Cheers,
Rich

Ah, had been looking where the green circle is at the back...
Looked at the front by the dipstick and there's a 9 character stamp on the front. Starts with R and is 9 characters long. That sound like the beasty?

As said above, We found a number 9 characters long. Begins with R. Don't want to post it up for obvious reasons, but does that sound like the one?

A quick Google session seemd to show that the earlier ones don't but the later ones do? I believe this is a later one (93) so that was why I was after confirmation. Looks like it may have to be sent off with unknown and see what happens.
Woman at DVLA told my mate they need to know it though to prove it hasn't been fitted with a stolen engine etc?

well true i guess. but sometimes the block is genuinely too corroded to read them. my old block it was impossible to read. lightly sanded it etc. could make some of it out, not all though.

Just re-edited the above pic with more circles Nic...
Orange - where we found an 8 digit stamp with GM and 93, google said this isn't the one.
Green - where a caterham forum discussing the engine number said it should be - couldn't see bugger all - limited access though without removing bits
Purple / Pink - where we found the 9 digit one as mentioned above.
Where do you say it should be? How did DVLA react to you saying it was unreadable?

see where the rocker breather is on the front? its basically down from that, to the rght of the base of the dipstick tube. its an angled part of the block where the gearbox attaches.
dvla office in carlisle said to write unkown down. so i did, they sent it off and the log book said unknown on it. i sold the car like that no problems.
