Assessment Objective 1:
Analyse the principles of games and its component disciplines:
• Choose two current titles from two different genres and describe their core mechanics, the style and level of interactivity, storytelling and narrative and its audio-visual components (1000 words max).
I am going to choose WOW and Call of Duty 4.
What does it mean by their core mechanics?

No idea, but glad I never have to do shitty essays like this ever again 
They may not be current but make sure you choose titles which you are comfortably familiar with, which I assume you are, as it will give you a decent start

I think the core mechanics would be things which make the game enjoyable, i.e the story or the different ways you cna play things.
This is a guess though, just coming from too much experience playing games.
Try wiki for guidelines maybe?

Chose those games you play then Doyle, the relevance isn't in how current the game is.
The core mechanics are the set of rules each individual game is based on. Read up about it on wiki.
