Why do these Xboxes come up with these red lights of death? (I don't own one, I just wandered why so many people have dead Xboxes lol and what causes it to happen).

Overheating or something which makes the glue loose and the motherboard moves apparently.

Close, when it overheats the paste under the heatsinks drys up because they use hardly any, if you stick some arctic 5 under them it will work fine.

Is that it then?
I thought it was something major like the CPU melting

I heard it was some new environmentally friendly solder used on the motherboard and in the power supply, which loses its conductivity over time whilst under load.
There are a few theories flying around tbh, but either way - it's pretty shoddy stuff

The solder can melt off and move around, you can heat gun it to re-melt it but im not sure if its worth it, cant see it lasting. The paste works though, iv done it to a few now and my backup one still works over 1 an a half years after.

Modern solder is lead free, its pretty rubbish to be honest, doesnt take very well, I usually pull out the lead stuff and the flux if I need a job doing properly.

As far as I knew, the heat warped the motherboard so the CPU would come away from it thus giving out the RRoD.

That's how bad things can get for the GPU/CPU ball grid array if the thermal compound isn't replaced on anything prior to a Jasper/Falcon console.
Also, on the earlier consoles, the 0.1uf teeny weeny peeny capaictors under the bga had a habit of falling off due to the shitty RoHS solder

I got the bottom right ring yesterday, I made it overheat by sticking cotton buds to stop the fans turning and it's fixed itself

Xbox's are seriously un-stable. My brand-new Xbox crashes quite often when playing the two latest games out (Forza 3 and CoD:MW2). I've only got the RRoD once and that was on a 3-month-old Elite (Falcon, which is supposed to be the best).
