What range foes your ammeter go to? If it has massive thick terminals and a range of about -60 to +60A then it simply sits in line with the alternator.
If it's got little thin terminals then it's actually a voltmeter which means that when placed across a resistance, it'll work as an ammeter.
Which is it?

The ammeter measures current flow (read power).
To get it working correctly, you have to run ALL the power for the car through it.
This WILL give problems eventually.
Ammeters are ONLY really suitable for older cars with a generator, unless you get onewith a REMOTE SHUNT (bit that actually measures the "amps").
Stick with a voltmeter!
