How much would you expect to pay a garage to diagnose a valve problem with your engine?

For comparison, a main dealer quoted just over £800 to remove the head, inspect it,skim it and put it back (this does not include any extra work to fix whatever the actual problem is lol).

Main dealer say the compression is low in the third cylinder and that a valve is to blame for dodgy idling and poor engine performance - but won't say exactly what the cause is without removing the head.

P.S. this isn't my car BTW, it's my other half's.

It could be a number of causes so they are right in saying they dont want to say what the problem is. It could be either a blown head gasket, burnt out valve or sticking valve. That sounds about right for main dealer prices though. I pulled the head off a corsa b 1.4 sport about 3 1/2 years ago, replaced a burnt out valve and the bill was in excess of £800

A head skim wouldn't be needed if it's just an inspection I'd have thought.
