Yeah thats right, heat from the engine is used to warm the cabin, its obvious as your temp gauge will fall when full heat is applied on the heater control panel.

it does cos the water in the heater matrix comes from the rad... so if u cool that down it cools the other water down

Where else do you think the heat for the internals comes from if not the engine?
My Fez does the same in traffic....never see the needle go anywhere near hot otherwise. Wouldn't fancy sticking the heaters on in yesterdays weather that's for sure. But if it meant saving my engine then it's a no-brainer.
Not been in my SRi enough yet to comment accurately but that day will come soon (engine swap imminent).
EDIT: Will say though also, that I turned my SRi over for half an hour the other day (she's mostly idle atm) and the water cap wasn't on properly...steaming wasn't the word and I needed new undies 'til I realised what was up

1) as been said, turning heaters on will take air from heater matrix, but will make fook all difference apart from making you very hot.
2) you coolant is pressurised system, so won't boil until 120 degrees, so as long as it doesn't go into the red you are ok
3) cooling fan will usually kick in around 100deg mark
4) my 1.6 sport runs around 94 deg, but will heat up quickly in traffic which my 1.4 would rarely do, which ran at 90
