the only reason had this was when my bank refused my direct debit, called them and sorted it and it took them 3 hours to reconnect me

Might be an outage in the area, or a fault on the line, have you checked the status page on VM's website? If it continues though, get them to send out an engineer to have a look - although it's worth checking all of your cabling from the cablebox in your house onwards, as if it is that they'll charge for the engineers callout.
Also, it's not a dodgy box is it? As it might just be the case that the new security update has made it's way to your area.

Virgin upgraded the software on most of their cable boxes, the upgrade was designed to facilitate the move to a new form of encryption with new cards, and also to cut off people using fun cards (dodgy).
It shouldn't have cut off boxes using legit cards tho. Try turning the box off and on again (at the mains).

You phoned up Virgin Media customer services to find out why your chipped box wasn't working?

its the card that was reprogramed, this was done ages ago and has worked fine up untill now, we was told that they couldnt find out unless they put the card into a card reader and saw we was getting more channels than we pay for

put the original card back in and see if it works, but yeah it probably is the new update. Not sure if they've found a way around the new update yet, i know EuroVox boxes and the likes are still screwed.

I know how they work, I've seen numerous of those types and others in operation. I still wouldn't have the brass neck to phone up Virgin Media asking why my dodgy box isn't working having thieved off them for however amount of months

I'm not overally impressed either (causes problems for other users, especially people with bodged cable modems, and costs the cable network millions a year - money which could be spent on upgrading the networking and improving/adding features), but unfortunately people steal and it'll continue to happen.
What you should have done is kept the original card and got them to programme another, that way if shit hits the fan then you have your original. But tbh i would say you f'ed and you certainly don't want an engineer sniffing around whilst having a dodgy card in the box (they'll terminate your contract if it's found). I would try and see if it can be reverted back (unlikely, unless someone has made a backup).
Edit -

In which case you wouldn't need a dodgy card. Problem is, they don't take lightly to people freeloading off their network and you can't blame them.
You might be lucky if an engineer came out, he might replace the card on the spot without checking it, but again, you're fucked if they find out it's been bodged.

Ring them up, tell them your little boy has removed the card and snapped it or something and they'll be able to post a new one out to you.
