It is really just chinese lanterns JR, although You wouldn't see anything like that flying over the populated land. The only unmanned aircraft I know of that is allowed in uk airspace is the HERTI. They flew that between England and Ireland a few years back

Regarding the aircraft lighting points, the only lights you're required to have for a night flight are your navigation lights which are the red, green and white lights. Strobes, landing lights and anti collision lights are not required.

They have to be more advanced than us (technology wise) to travel the required distances, they live far enough away that we can't see or hear them through all of the spectrum we know of, and we can see quite far.
