Got a fine the other day for not having my new tax disc in the window. I had just got the car, taxed it online, but the disc went to the previous owners adress.

My mate reckons i'll be able to get off with it?

Any gen on this?

They have relaxed the laws in terms of 4 days grace after the last day of the month and displaying tax.

However there is 2 main offences with road tax. Not having it, and not displaying it.

I can't imagine you'd get away with it.

I kinda assumed that too.

My mate says he got off with it. He went to the police station and explained the situation and they wrote it off?

Hmmm . . .

All you can do is try. As long as you have proof of actually paying for the tax.

what he said really, they can check when you purchased the tax on their computers anyway I think, and where It was sent to, if you explain the situation you might get away with it.

I would of thought once the fine was issued the police couldn't just write it off

It showed up on their computer as taxed, but they still gave me the ticket.

Being honest, ive had alot on lately and signed off work with depression etc etc and going to get a stupid peice of paper from the previous owner was last on my mind. I may go in and explain . . .

The offence is not displaying, not whether you have it or not.

i drove around with mine not on display for a week as my tax disc decided to not stick to my windscreen anymore, and nothing happened.

must have just been lucky.

like deano said i thought they relaxed the laws on displaying.

Challenge it, even if you think you won't get off. Challenge it. Explain you were sorry and you didn't mean to cause any offence and that you had reasons, express your reasons and write them a formal letter with appropriate grammer and spelling. If you ow someone money do not get cheeky, and try to explain your reasons for it not showing and that it was a complete mis-understanding.

3 weeks back i recieved a parking fine for parking on a double yellow lines. Did not see a sign so i challenged it with a formal letter expressing my appology and they wrote back and said they would not take the matter any further. Always worth a challenge!

Did you not know not to park on double yellows without a sign?

I hope you used a grammer checker.
