i have got a K&N induction kit and it only realy helped at around 3000 3500 Rpm
So i decided that this was probs due to the amount of heat that it was sucking from the engine bay.
To prevent the induction kit from doing this i bought a peice of aluminium Sheet to act as a heat sheild from the warmth given off by the engine which the induction kit loves to try and suck.
After bending the sheet into a box like shape i then secured it to the engine bay using the mounts of the old air box and some very large washers.
I then bought some aluminium pipe and chopped it into two peaces to act as a twin cold air feed. By using aluminium pipe it again reflect the heat!
I hav noticed that by doing this its really made a differance lower down the rev range as well as it did B4 at around 3500 rpm
The main prob with a drilled air box is that there is no direct cold air being thrown at it by pipes and also the base of the box where the holes ar all drilled, is a bit out of the way for the air to flow to.Also the other prob is that the box id black which just ends up getting warm coz it absorbs heat!!!!
Hope this helps!
Phil

Would the K&N fit inside the standard airbox?

Wouldnt it of been easier to just stick a performance panel filter in your old air box?

Perhaps but at least with this method ya still have alot more free air circulating around the filter, from the pipes etc
Also the volume of air that surrounds the induction kit is greater than that inside the box
Meaning MORE POWER!

Panel filter and drilled box would have given better results.

All that the heat sheild did was simply stop my flat spots when the induction kit was sucking like a bitch

This is all utter bollox. Yeah, cold air is better. But, look at that space you create ontop of your wheel arch when you remove the airbox! Plenty of air gets in when you're moving at any speed over say 20mph. Drive about, then stop and feel the surface of your filter. If you've been sucking warm air your filter will be warm. My PiperX is almost always very cool when i do this.
