i've put my battery in the boot and earthed it, but not sure how thick the power lead will need to be going through the car back into the engine bay. would this be ok???

Though the second is 16mm, I'd be looking to use that size as a MINIMUM personally.

Why not just get some really thick stuff?
Like 0 gauge power cable:

standard cables in the engine bay are usualy 8 gauge so 4 gauge should be fine, altough copper wire wouldbe better silver cable still does the job fine.
