im not normally one to ask about comupter bits but its been so long since ive even looked at this stuff ive lost track on whats decent.

ive always been an AMD fan, but im having difficulty choosing what to buy.

i dont wanna spend lots and lots, but around £500-600 mark, i want something fairly future proof..

atm i have

AMD64 X2 6000 @ 3.0Mhz
MSN SLi Deluxe Mother Board
4GB DDR2 Ram
XFX 8800GT

i was looking at the follwing

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.4Mhz
MSI NF980-G65 AM3 (not too sure on board but this one seems pretty decent)
6GB DDR3 @ 1333mhz
(not sure on graphics card) - i am thinking about 8800GT SLi or GTX285

but im not sure whether to spend more and get an intel setup...

what you think of it.?

thing is for the same price Intel you cant get near the performance of the 965.

you're wasting money by "future proofing", there's always something better that's going to come out sooner or later and make your hardware specification look terrible. saying that, you're not going for i7 or i5 processor wise anyway.

why not go for Intel over AMD though? Intel have proven to have the faster CPUs for the last few years.

I wasn't aware AMD had redeemed themselves either, smart money goes on intel.

forgot to add, if you're going to go with Intel, go with a top end dual core or quad core, most, if not all, of the newer top end dual/quad processors are quick and efficient on power.

i need to test it. i just use it for accounts at the moment. the black edition is good for overclocking, but i haven't attempted it.
need to get a good PC game and test it.

the i7 chips were too expensive at the time, but they're cheaper now.

noshua - what i mean by future proof is having a system that will still be decent in 2 - 3 years.

the system i got now i bought 2 years ago.. and its still by all accounts a decent rig.

john, you say the smart money is on intel.. in my eyes for the same money you can get a faster AMD processor..

yes Intel have proven that they do a much faster chip, but there is a price to pay for that..

take a look here. - http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

- Intel Core i7 975 @3.33Mhz gets 7,004 @ £811

- AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.4mhz gets 4,249 @ £150

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Quad Core CPU @ 2.83mhz gets 4,291 @ £211

the best intel chip you can get would be about this one.

- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 Quad Core CPU @2.66mhz gets 3,759 @ £152
