I'll start with that, I just bought a new haynes manual too, because my current corsa one doesn't cover the diesel engine.

Could be indeed, anyway to test it? Other than to take them out and get them cleaned?

Don't think so no. You could get them pressure tested to find out when they inject, and compare to manufactures spec. The Conical face may no be seating correctly, which would mean there is always diesel leaking into the cylinder, or the spring could be worn, again meaning diesel would be leaking in. But, they would have to come out yes

Not sure about air mass sensor. I'll have to have a look/wait for the manual. Same deal with a lambda sensor.
Black smoke under load and on gear change must be over fuelling though. Mustn't it?

Or lack of air...

True, I did just replace the air filter, was quite blocked before, but should be fine now.
Lack of air would be much harder to do any other way as far as I can see. Unless something horrible's going on inside the inlet plenium.
Like there being a big oily octopus in there or something. That'd explain everything actually...

The smoking was alot better on the drive home from work yesterday, so I thought why not try again for the MOT. I needed to at some point a) to see if it'd go through and b) to get my 10 day retest.
It failed. Again.
A tail light's blown, fine.
Both handbrake cables frayed (not spotted on the last test less than a month ago)
And my old pal the excessive smoke.
Looking at my new Haynes manual it does appear to have an EGR valve. So I'll test that by taking off the vacuum tube and seeing if I can hear it. I'll have a look round halfords too and see what magic potions they have for smokey diesels.
So that's £45 for the new test, £19.40 for two new handbrake cables.
This car had better goddamn pass at some point!
I don't think thrashing the car is the answer anymore. I thrashed the tits off it for the past few days. Doesn't seem to really have helped.
I am starting to wonder if someone's turned the diesel pump up.

Get a Mityvac, to see it opens/closes. If it does, remove it, clean it and re-test.
If it doesn't, renew, retest.

See if the fuel has been turned up, there should be an anti-tamper cover on the max fuel screw, if its not there or looks a bit scratched up, it probably has been turned up.
You could turn the boost up to get more air in also.

I agree on the max fuel screw. I'm not sure if I have to take off the whole inlet manifold to access it though, which would mean getting a new gasket.
And I can't turn up the boost, because I've not got a turbo.
