1. sand down using 800 grit then 1500 grit to get a nice key
2. clean with alcohol wipes
3. spray with primer
1st coat a light dusting
wait 15 mins
another light coat
wait 15 mins again
final coat go for full coverage
leave to fully dry
4. sand with 1200 grit
5. clean with alcohol wipes
6. spray with colour repeating the above steps
7. sand lightly with 1500 grit to get a matt finish
8. clean with alcohol wipes
9. spray with lacquer in the same way
10. after a couple of weeks you can polish/wax if you feel the need
best to leave overnight between different paints especially before
sanding.
and stand the rattle cans in hot water before you spray so they
don't splutter and ruin your work ... this is most important with
the lacquer as it will go milky otherwise.
if anyone knows better please correct me, but this is what I do
and I get good results
Edit - well spotted toby

You will have to sand down with some thing rougher than 800 grit to start with if you want to get rid of the stone chips. 180/240ish, then work your way up to 500. No need for 800 grit at all, especially not 1500 grit!!
Id do it, 180,240,420,400,500, primer, 800 primer, tak cloth it, paint, laquer.

well I am just a have-a-go sprayer, I got decent results..... I think I will try it your way next time I do it as you seem to have more experience than me
If anyone else has advise please post as I'm always up for getting better
