Cleaned the car today for the first time in aaaaages, although is not spotless and I could have spent more time on it, it does look much better. Im tempted to spend a bit of money on it but im a bit worried about some bubbles that have appeared on the paintwork following winter. What causes surface rust on cars, or little areas of bubbling? How much would it cost to sort them? Also, anyone know how can I prevent the problem worsening in the meantime?

Anyway heres the pics...

Its the winter roads, there fucking horrific! Rust bubbles will appear where the paint has cracked or stone chips which have allowed water and salt to seep through to the bare metal, causing corrosion under the paint, which is what these bubbles are. If you leave them it'll only spread further and eventually rot a nasty hole Washing the car more regulary would help as would not takinout on the winter road at all, obviously these cant be helped if its your only car.

Bit of time and effort - Best thing you could do yourself is take a grinding stone to the rusted areas and take it back to fresh clean,corrosion-less metal ( dont be shy but take your time as you could heat and warp the panel) Then slap a couple of thin coats of filler on and sand down with sanding block! Bit of time and effort does the trick, then you paint the area with a colour match and blend in with wet and dry or you could have somebody paint the panels.

Cant be arsed - pay someone to do the whole thing. A quick fix would be to treat it with kurust (available at halfrauds or diy shops) and slap sum black hammerite on when its dry. Cheap tempory fix but doubt it'll beat that rust!

Hope this helps, you have a rare clean example of a standard mk II

Looks good! MK2's have grown on me alot of late.

I bought mine as it was cheap and im a sucker for old cars.

Waxed it the other day. Came up well. Just stuck a years MOT on it too!

I admit the wheels arent to everyones taste, but they look better in person.

The cars is going away this weekend to fund a BMW.......

Cheers guys! I can see myself keeping the golf a while. They are only going up in price. Id be tempted to spend some money keeping it mint in the near future too.
