I'm sure I've read on here that they slide off, but I don't know in what direction

well the windscreen rubber would stop them going forward, so try opening the boot and sliding them backwards ..... I will have a look in the morning as have been thinking about this myself

ive tried but they wont slide back because the boot stops them.
i dont no weather to just pull them of paint them and if the clips are broke tigerseal them on

IIRC
Starting at the back.
Put a bit of towel underneath a flat bladed screw drver (saves scratching car) at the back of the rail as you can just get to it.
Then prise it up gently, the rails are held in with some clips - about 4 or 5 all the way along - but be very careful because they can snap very easily.
Start at the backa nd work your way forwards, they become easier as you get closer to the front, but also easier to snap the clips.

Done this many times, suprised more people dont know how haha
I (Not worrying about my rubbish paint), got a screw driver under them at the front and just prised up the first bit, then got my hands under them and just pulled them up. Clips are a bit tight.
There metal too, not plastic.
