Not sure how far Maidenhead is from London but last weekend I was in London and paid £7.50 for a day travel card which only covered zones 1-7. That was for tube (what was open of it anyways) and buses.
Obviously you'd need to get to London first though.

Could get an Oyster card...
Then just take a train (single ticket journey) to a terminal tube station, e.g. Ealing Broadway / Paddington or whatever.
Then just use the Oyster in london... It'll calculate the best fare and if you end up using it a lot, it'll convert itself to the cheapest 'overall ticket'. e.g. if you are constantly using it, it'll convert to a travel card anyway.
Depends really.
If you think you'll be hammering the travel card, e.g. getting on and off the tube all day long, making many many journeys... then you may as well just get the travel cards.
If alternatively like me last week, you need to go into london a couple of days, go to a few tube stations, then I'd get a cheap single to Ealing Broadway and just do the rest on your oyster.

i dont understand the whole oyster thing.
Thing is once in London i will be randomly travelling all over. Mostly walking where possible but tube if its raining or im going long distance. Will be staying around the tower area hopefully but will be all over the place.
I just want the freedom to board tubes whenever really, i dont mind paying the double hit, but obv if theres a cheaper way id love to know

Its just a credit card like device that you load money onto and use as a travel pass, when boarding a bus for example just swipe it past this pad and it automatically does your fare for you.
If you want freedom just buy a couple of days pass and use that whenever and where ever you want to go in london

You don't get fined. You just pay the maximum fare a journey would cost on that train.

£14 is pretty good TBH. Try The Trainline for advanced fairs on the trip into town because a travelcard is about £7 when you're there.

Oyster card is the way forward. I know when using the tube, you get charged a maximum £5 per day. Probably worth investing in one and reusing it whenever you go to London.

Depends whether you travel peak/off peak.
I pay circa 2k a year for the 'pleasure' of the tube.

I thought it didn't matter? I used to travel pretty much the length of the Northern line, 6.30 in the morning and 4.00 in the afternoon. I didn't notice any difference if I travelled slightly later?
