I went to see shutter island last night and thought it was quality-but im a tad unsure wether at the end he was mental, or pretending to be to get labotomised?

The point is that he went mental because of the trauma and when they made him remember it he didn't want to be cured as he knew it would always haunt him.

Think that made me overthink this film was that he wanted to be labotomised so they showed the lighthouse at the end BUT the lighthouse was empty, Scorsese put the lighthouse in to fuck with my head i think. I still think it could be either way. He was totally sane when he came to the island and they made him insade or what they want u to think, that he was insane all along.

I also think it could have been either way at the end, there's no way you can tell what one it was unless someone has said outside of the film.

i dont think he went to the island sane, because he had flashbacks of what happened and even the things he was saying confirmed that.
he did come round at the end though, live as a monster or die as a good person, obviously he wanted to be labotomised rather than live with the knowledge and memories of what he did

Yes - The journey on the way to the island, he couldn't find his cigarettes and was smoking his 'partners' which he later got told (imagined) contained some kind of drugs e.g. he was insane all along. Sorry that was a poor attempt at putting my point across
