I love my 70-300 lens, and even if I was starting off I probably would of kept a bigger lens if I had the choice.
So personally, for the sake of £80, I would of kept it

I would of kept it because it's a decent lens to have a play about with.

Thing is though, The AF Didn't work on it
I'm looking for a fish eye or a 70-300mm one

What camera do you have?
The Nikon 70-300 is a pretty good lens for the price.
I was facing the same debate and I just went for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and I do not regret it. Depends on how seriously you want to take photography though!

Once you'd had a little practice, this wouldn't of been an issue.

as alex said with more practice its a great lens if anything it made me shoot better in manual mode. i got some decent shots just a tad out of focus.
this is one of my faves like i say out of focus but not too bad
there is a tamron 70-300mm on a website the name escapes me for £130. bargain imo

This is probably the one you're thinking of mate: Link
Not sure if it'll work with the D40 because it's an FX format instead of DX.
I'd like to get this one

M = Full manual mode, you can control shutter speed and aperture.
A = Aperture priority, you set the aperture and the camera will set the shutter speed.
S = Shutter priority, basically the opposite of A mode.
P = Program, can't remember what this means
The right hand button just underneath the shutter release lets you adjust the aperture (when the mode allows), hold it and then turn the spinny wheel thing which you can see further down this pic.
