Not really, if you put the table there and then covered it up its clearly still there

The age old question of 'if a tree falls in the forest with no one to hear it, does it make a sound'

simple answer. it makes a sound wave. if no ones there to hear it then that sound wave isnt interpreted into a sound.

on topic my mate keeps calling the penines the Philippines

Extending this slightly, you have 3 requirements for sound - The sound source, the transmission medium (water, air, solid) and person/animal/transmission receiver. Remove any of those 3 and there is no sound.

On the philosophy side of things, i've had this conversation a number of times at uni, usually someone will followed up with something like 'is sound only a sound when someone hears it?', at which point it's just a head fuck of 'what is sound exactly?' and bundle/substance theories.....

well imo the sound is still there as if there was a reciever there, there would be a sound so just because there is no reciever a tree falling wont stop and think 'ooo no ones here ill do this silently' it will still produce the sound wave just no one is around to hear it.

dont sound waves travel for a rediculously long way/forever or is that just an urban myth i have heard.

If you put a spider in a matchbox and close how do you know its still there.
out of sight could mean it stops exsisting as no one can validates its life.

hence why there has always been a god since the dawn of time.
How can we validate our own exsistance if no one is else is out there.
therefore god was created to give our life if we do exsist purpose.

if you put a camera in a forest with a mic and it fell would you expect to come to the camera a day later and hear nothing as it fell?

Sound is just the air vibrating, If there is nobody there to "receive" the vibrations, you won't hear anything as your not there
The vibrations (sound) will however still be there but not heard.

Yes very very far in water, you can hear boats on the coast of the uk in south america, with sophisticated listening equipment, pretty amazing really.

But surely sound is merely the brains interpretation of the movement of the particles (in this case air). Consequently if there is no one around to 'hear' the sound then its not actually a sound its merely a movement of particles caused by the tree falling.

I think the new dumbass comment of the day goes to the Scot on the news:

"Planes fly 30-40,00ft higher than the clouds, so why the delay? It's just stupid!"

Yeah it was cut nicely, to make him sound like more of an idiot.
What he meant was they fly at 30-40000ft above the clouds, not adding an extra 30-40000ft on top of the clouds and when the planes get nearer the destination they are below the clouds anyway away from danger.....so why the delay.

mmm, suppose sound is only a word, it becomes "sound" when it's heard.

Sounds that aren't heard are just vibrations.
