I want to change a picture from colour to black and white without losing any of the detail or clarity etc etc. what software can i use (preferably free!) ? Im stuck for ideas

Word/publisher can do it too iirc not sure about quality of it though.

the windows picture viewer can change them to b&w as well. I use it for edting most photos tbh, really simple, but does the job

i normally just desaturate mine in photoshop, not sure if its the best way but certainly does the job, judge for yourself on the clarity

Lightroom is best tbh, B&W Preset then edit levels to control detail and contrast

desaturate leaves the image very flat. Try tweaking the colour channels:
