Could do with a new job, I can't work in a office anymore espcially when its getting towards the summer again!
Anyone have any knowledge on what its like to be a fireman/woman? Shifts? Wages things like that?

This is one the things I always wanted to do a few years back, well I still do.
Its a difficult thing to get into, the best way to start from what I have read online etc is to become a retained firefighter but obviously your job has to be happy with it and you need to work/live close to the station.
Pay is (IMO) quite low to start but goes up after a year or so.

Does that mean I would effectively be all call whilst at my other job? As that wouldn't go down too well
As long as the wage isn't dire I don't mind as I would be back outside and hopefully be enjoying it.

hard to get in, i went and failed. a girl i know went at the same time and pissed it. they have a quota for females and minotrities, and im not joking they have seperate recruitement for them.
shifts and wages depend on area, expect 18k ish during training and 23k+ once youre on the job.

What did you fail at? An assesment on a physical test?
Can you apply for it online or do I need to go to the local fire station?

physical.
when i applied my local fire brigade had you phone up and request a place on an initial fitness test. you pass that and then you get to apply, then an assesment its further testing.
was hard enough getting through on the phones to get that first place, constantly engaged from the minute the lines opened

Ive tryed 3 years in a row to get into Greater Manchester fire and rescue service Its so dam hard to get into. Furthest i got was last year to the psychological tests stage. After that i was told my application would be taken no further.
I dont think it was because i failed them but because i wasnt told any results and tbh the question were relatily simple. But they have to cut number of applicants at each stage and i wasent lucky enough to be picked.
Ive not heard of any recrutment driver for gm fire this year eather.
I am also unlucky that i live just a little bit to far away from my local fire station. So i cant even become a retained firefighter.
i will keep tyring though.

Im starting as a retained firefigher in the next few months, just waiting on the first avaliable initial training. I was lucky enough as there was two places available, only 9 people went for them.
Id imagine the full time application will be a lot tougher than the retained though.

I applied once, competition is tough!!
There were guys there who had been trying to get in for 10yrs+ & from all over the country.
I gave up as it was too difficult to get into.
I ended up working offshore instead where im part of the ER team & get to do some firefighting training & drills, get paid double & dont have to pick heads up off the side of the road!!

My mate has tried Bucks, Herts, and Oxford Fire. Got rejected in all 3. He got to the final stages once or twice too. VERY hard to get into.

It's one of those professions you are really lucky to get into unless you have links already within the service or have tits or come from Pakistan.
Strathclyde Fire Service haven't recruited anyone in the firefighter side of things for 18 months+

Easyest way to get in would be to be a black, jewish lesbian tbh.
