That's still the only difference, if you have hands and eye's you can click buttons on the computer, it's not as if it means you have an indepth knowledge of electronics.

Yeah..but lets be honest...most Salesman have no idea.

Foot on brake was for push button start. Either clutch or brake works. I use clutch but i'm sure John will tell me i'm wrong.

in theory yes.

i can type words on a keyboard doesnt mean i can do sql and other programming pc bollox.

i would be willing to bet that if you gave a normal technician an error like "can bus no communication with CIM" they wouldnt be able to "press a few buttons" and fix it.

say for fly by wire john. how does ecu calibrate that? it has to open it then close it fully. does this happen when you put ignition on and fire it up right away? or what that be covered in the wait a couple of seconds?

The same way that your printer does. But your printer runs on stepper motors and your throttle will run on a servo. A servo doesn't need calibrating to know where it is, a stepper motor does.

electronic throttles run on stepper motors also. older cars had servo hydraulic assist from inlet manifolds.

thinkin bout johns reply now bout being able press a view buttons to programme-on earlier cars like astra g's, youwould literally plug tech2 in, read engine ecu, select sps, then plug tech2 into a desktop, download programme and plug back in.

on the new stuff, that operate on can lines, there is a lot more than just pressing buttons. you do have to "marry up" probably about 20 ecus, which in fairness is done by pressing buttons. but you do need knowledge of can lines and bus controllers when programming, because if you mis programme an ecu like a CIM for example, with the wrong ident, that fucks up the rest of the ecu's on the can line.

hence why your average mechanic wont do it. when i worked there, i never did engine work, or servicing, it was all can related issues.

and it was fuckin brill

just spoke to my bro about your glow light john.

if its below 5c the light will stay on for longer as it warms fuel up.

light ALWAYS comes on as it just going through its normal diagnostic checks.

next time its below 5c start it up straight away and see what happens.

I find with my 1.9 cdti Astra, sometimes if i let the glow plug light go out and try to start it straight away it doesnt like it. I have to leave it 2 seconds AFTER the light has gone out, especially on cold days or first thing in a morning. Yet other times i will come to it, like after work, when its warm and the glow plug light wont come on at all and i just fire it in straight away with no problems.

My Astra 1.9 CDTI takes a couple of extra turns when it's cold and I try to start it before the glow plug light goes out.
