IMO They were a good thing, the problem is the implementation was crap.
Everyone will still end up paying the same because you still need the energy certificate and the searches will just end up with the buyer so if you are selling and buying it will still cost you the same.

Just a note to everyone that bought recently. The EPC is still a legal requirement to market a property, if you keep your old one it is valid for 10 years. Saves £50 when it's time to sell again!
