Ok.
Small discussion in work today.

My collegeue wants to get 1986 as a tattoo in roman neumerals (original??)
An old git tells him its: MCMLXXXVI

However, i think its XIVMM.


Can anyone clafiry please?.

You can't subtract XIV from MM.

Can you not subtract xiv from m?..then add m?

MCM = 1000 + (1000 - 100) = 1900

LXXX = 80

VI = 6

No, you only subtract one place.

So MCM is 2000 minus the 100 but MCCM isn't valid, if you want to subtract 200 you have to add from the lower number.

MDCCC = 1800

just watch any tv show from the 90s and check the end after the credits, it's always mcm etc...
