my mate has a PD Bora, feels fast as fuck when your inside but really its not, just gives a massive lump of power over short revs
mine pulls all the way to just under 5k
Should rev the pd's to just over 4k as thats where max power is.
You can get fabia vrs's for 5k, the early ibiza fr's are less than 5k too.
What about audi a4's?

Max power yeah, but not Max torque, by 'just over 4k' you are well off the torque curve!

It's possible to get a 100k+ mile (which is nothing) 330d sport for near his budget.

You'd get a reasonably high mileage Astra H CDTI for the budget. Get one with XP and it ticks all the boxes.

Grande Punto Sporting 1.9.
Fiesta Zetec S TDCi.
Both would be dogs for that money though.

It could be a pre-facelift with it being an 01 model.

Well done here they were non-existent, especially when I was looking in February. They haven't gone down in price in over 18 months imho.
