is it actually legal to drive about with headphones in? i assume so? i see loads of people doing it and i dont have a radio in my corsa so was going to do that with my ipod so i can listen to some bon jovi while i drive about.

i'm not sure on this but i know when on a motorbike its legal to have one earphone in.

My mate's got big headphone type ear protectors he wears sometimes when driving as the car is that loud inside. He musn't have had any problems.

If it is legal then I'm surprised that it is because I'd have thought it'd restrict your hearing more than having a normal radio so you'd be less aware of your surroundings.

it was just what was on itunes at the time i typed the message. although u wont pretend. i like some bon jovi records. when i was in school the band i played in, one of first songs we learned was wanted dead or alive. but i digress.

Its not a offence to use a Ipod while driving however its a grey area as a police officer maybe able to charge with careless and inconsiderate driving if they can prove to the courts that due to the person using a ipod caused careless or dangerous driving, using a mobile phone while driving is a specific offence and is specific meaning they have to be using a "mobile phone while driving"
However if i see someone using ipod then i could report them for careless driving but i have to prove to the magistrates judge that due to this person using the Ipod caused there standard of driving fell below what was the acceptable and expected level of standard driving which could be "I was behind "x" vehicle and saw that "MR.Smith" was looking down at his ipod, at this point his car drifted across the middle white line onto the other side of the road" hence the offence is complete. But if the driver just used his Ipod and drove along safely without crossing the white line then i would have a hard time convincing the judge that this males standard of driving fell below the standard expected of all road users.
So no there is not a specific offence for using your ipod, the sat nav, having a cup of coffee or eating a apple from your hand, however if your standard of driving was below what is expected because you are doing these things or anything else and each case is taken on its own merits then you can be charged with Drive mechanically propelled vehicle without due care and attention or more serious offences like dangerous driving etc etc under the road traffic act if you cause a accident.
In each situation each case is taken in its own merit.

typically i just found out that the tractor pulling is on near my mates workshop on the air field. wish i had known hours ago i would have gone down for a watch. bet they like bon jovi.

according to the friendly traffic officer that stopped me just before. it is only illegal if you are holding and opperating the music device.
first time ive ever been pulled over as they heard me from a distance away.......oops.
