I can hear my mates on the mike but not the rest of the team or other team 
Checked the volume online and on the mike etc but still no joy..also checked chat setting etc

If your in team death match for example you will only be able to hear your own team, also make sure you're not in party chat.
To check this click the middle Xbox button a click onto the party, once viewing the party it should say the line above the list of people in your party what chat your in, to change hte chat channel press the "Y" button.
Oh and if your using a PS3, get a XBOX.... Simples

Ya might have ya privacy settings set to only hear ppls on ya friends list.

I've done the 'Game chat' thing and that's okay..I'll check stuff out cheers Nath

Sometimes my wireless mic drops connection randomly, where you can hear people through the tv etc but they cant hear and it just flashes to connect, maybe yours is doing this?
