With the engine running? Will it cause the engine to stop? I think the engine will continue to run due to the alternator.
A friend has a problem with her car cutting out sometimes and thinks the battery + terminal is coming off causing it. (yes I've told her to tighten it, bit she stopped hasn't)

Will cut out. Ecu will lose power. Why not turn it off, change battery then restart?

Na alternator is connected to the battery first, no battery, no spark, no engine running.

the car will continue to run for a short time on the charge in the alternator before cutting out, but it can damage the alternator leaving it off for to long

How can it though? If the alternator isn't connected directly to ecu, injectors, coil etc.

I thought the battery and alternator were in parallel with each other, so the alternator can charge the battery and supply the cars electrics. Whilst the battery is just for starting the car.
