Other half is looking for a car, I wanted to get her something decentish.

Spotted a 1999
Audi a3 1.8t sport,
124k miles
Full black leather
Standard car
120k miles
Plenty MOT & Tax

He's asking £1995

I've bartered down to £1600 so far as it needs a new ABS sensor, but what else should I be looking out for

Cheers

The cambelt should have been done twice by now, and the water pump replaced for one with metal blades.

I'll be doing that straight after purchasing anyway as I never believe people when they say it's been done, too many people lie about it

True. But still, be prepared for the fact the turbo seals may give up the ghost. Having said that it pends how it's been looked after. Audi are deffo up their though

This is true, i've been looking at Audi A4 TDIs for around 10k. They all seem to have some 30k a year

Why does every1 rave about higher mileage on Vag cars etc??Any car that has been looked after and serviced regulary should go on to do high miles.

What is the actuall mileage on the car??120k or 124k?? 11yrs old at 12k a year average works out at 132k as the average mileage for a car of that age.

P.S 1600 is pretty cheap for an A3 turbo sport with full leather.I would snap it up.

For a 120k mile A3 i would be paying alot of attention to:

The rear bushes in the front wishbone bushes - they will more than likely be split or coming unbonded from the alu rings.

The anti roll bar bushes - if they are goosed it will need a new rollbar also as the old bar will tear up the new bushes within 10k

The front suspension top mounts will probably have some lift in by now

The rear axel bushes will be split away from the alu inserts in the center

Rear springs may be broken also

Camcover gasket and the gasket for the chain tensioner solenoid often leak

Check also for split breather pipes

Also if you want to get the price down further double check the service history - often overlooked by some garages are Air condioning system service and brake fluid changes - both due every 2 years

See plenty of the above day in day out at that kind of mileage.

Other than that they are pretty nice cars

can someone please tell me why vag engines seem to be ''just run in'' at 100k+ miles?

it's not like they are using different things to other marques as an engine is an engine in it's bare state.

i think it's just vag scene talk tbh.

VAG tinted glasses, ahhhh love it.

Like Matt said, watch the rubbers and bushes, I'd be expecting the turbo to fuck up pretty soon and the engine is NOT just run in. It's like any car, some will march on regardless of miles, some will fuck up.

Because they are talking bollocks to be honest.. its all down to how well they are looked after.. The 1.8T doesnt seem to give huge amounts of trouble at high miles IF its been well looked after. Its all the electrical crap around the engine and the hoses that go regardless of maintenance

An example of such is my old passat 1.8T - 160k no problems and made 142bhp and 161lb/ft at a SE rolling road day..
