Hey guys,

I have a set of works wheels and i've cleaned all the bolts so there chrome by dipping them in rust remover, acid to remove dirt and then in a drill with super resin. I left one out in water to see how they weather and its starting to rust again.

What can i do to prevent this as i don't want this to happen when i fit my wheels on.

candle wax, you need something that will stop moisture coming into contact with the metal

Ok, Im not painting them Mike, defeats the point and i'm sure that when i torque them up the paint would split.

VrsTurbo, any more info on candle wax, wouldnt that remove the shine from them?

If your worried about them rusting they certainly dont need to be shiney

a good metal polish might help but maybe need to keep putting it on every so often

So they were rusty chrome and you stripped the surface rust off yeh?

I'd imagine if they were dipped in acid etc then they may well have had their anti rust biit stripped off. I'm pretty sure chrome bolts aren't meant to rust anyway

You can get black wheel bolts from various BMW's, I keep meaning to get some myself.

I just want them to stay chrome or shiney silver atleast. The heads are all visible on my wheels. There must be a product out there i can apply?

If they're going rusty then they're fooked as numerous Honda's I do have the same bolts and are NEVER rusty. You can keep metal polishing them, but thats a bit pointless. I'd suggest replacing them with new ones. Chrome wheel bolts are chrome as they're not meant to rust!

Rob, you either need to paint them, or get stainless steel bolts. Steel rusts - hence why cars and almost everything else steel are painted or plated.

Rich and Tom,

There stainless steel bolts from a set of 3 piece wheels theres 36 per wheel.

When i removed them they were filthy but not particularly rusty

Hmm, may have to sadly get the hammerite out then and hope that works and holds when tightening them up, iwant gold plated boltts but i have no funds

take them to be electroplated, and get a colour passive finish which is gold

Stainless can still corrode.

Plating is the best option by a long shot, you should get a good few years from them if done properly!

Stainless steel can still rust. It's dependent on the alloy.

That's anodizing which is for aluminium alloys. You want electroplating

Go over the top of them with some clear nail varnish, not sure how long it will last, just give them a few coats.
