as title, i need a program that will search specific files for certain phrases
for example
i need it to draw off names, an 8 digit number and a couple of other bits and bobs
anyone got any recomendations

When you say search, do you mean find the phrase in files which you have stored, or that you open the file and pick out phrases from it?
Windows itself will do the former.
Excel will do the latter, get the data in there and use Autofilter and tell it what you want the phrase to start with / contain etc.
If its any more complicated than that I would probably use Perl for it but you'll need some programming for that. If you want to send me the files and what you want the rows to look like I could knock something up.

sorry not going to be able to send the files as there NHS patient docs,
i have 8 word files, i need to search through them without opening them

as said Windows Search should do the trick if it's .doc/.docx files
